Tips for Dealing with Police

If you get pulled over by the police what do you do?
- Remain calm. Choose your words, gestures and expressions carefully.
- Don't lose your temper or fight with a police officer.
- Know your rights. Anything you say or do can and will be used against you.
- Always keep your hand on the steering wheel or visible to the officers.
- Don't try to make a break for it. Never assault or even touch an officer.
- Cooperate. Do everything the officer asks and don't try to resist arrest, even if you may not be guilty.
- Be respectful to the officers. Don't use physical or verbal threats.
- Wait until you have a lawyer present before you make a statement.
- Once you've been arrested request a lawyer right away.
- Write down officer's badge numbers and patrol car numbers.
- Make notes of all the details and keep a record of everything that happened.
- Look for witnesses at the scene. Take down names and phone numbers.
- If you have sustained an injury, seek immediate medical attention and also document the injury with photos.
